The 23  Attack Forms
Notes By Gary E. Moore:
Atemi Waza (Striking or Thrusting Techniques)
	- Shomenate – Entering block from inside Uke’s arm / 
	Hand to face.
- Aigamae Ate – Entering block from outside Uke’s arm / 
	Elbow and hand to face
- Gyaku-Gamae-Ate – Outside block / Enter with arm/hand 
	over Uke’s arm to forehead
- Gedan-Ate – Outside block / Enter arm under Uke’s arm 
	across body / Body throw / Throw down the line of Uke’s feet or over leg
- Ushiro-Ate – Move to the side contacting arm with both 
	hands / bring around and release / move behind / throw without grabbing / 
	move to the side
 Hiji Waza (Elbow Techniques)
	- Oshi-Taoshi – Outside elbow block / Circle behind Uke 
	/ Move Uke’s wrist toward ear / Move behind Uke’s elbow / Roll the elbow 
	down, around, and out / Pin Uke’s shoulder with foot / Lock arm forward and 
	down
- Ude-Gaeshi – Failed Oshi-Taoshi / Outside elbow block 
	/ Circle behind Uke / Move Uke’s wrist toward ear / Follow Uke’s push behind 
	arm making Uke step / Turn hips toward Uke to the rear allowing Uke’s hand 
	to rise above Uke’s head / Figure four and step forward pushing hands to 
	front center / Follow Uke’s fall and complete with locking arm curl
- Hiki-Taoshi – Outside elbow block / Circle behind Uke 
	/ Hand exchange turning Uke around / Eye threat / With Uke’s pinky up apply 
	pressure to Uke’s elbow / Walk away from Uke backwards allowing Uke to fall
- Ude-Hineri – Failed Hiki-Taoshi / Circle behind Uke / 
	Hand exchange turning Uke around / Eye threat / Move Uke’s hand into 
	off-balance / Catch Uke’s hand to back of belt / Figure Four / Open towards 
	Uke creating step / Drop and allow Uke to fall
- Jujitsu-Waki-Gatame – Outside block matching elbow to 
	Uke’s elbow / Follow direction of attack applying pressure to elbow until 
	Uke kneels / Wrist lock while moving a half step away
- Waki-Gatame – Inside butterfly block leading Uke 
	forward / Turn back toward Uke palm out / Circle behind Uke / Hand exchange 
	high in center / Feed wrist with pinky up into crook of opposite elbow 
	holding wrist by pulling forearm with palm to face / Uke’s elbow should be 
	centered across chest / Other elbow crosses over bicep with palm out / 
	Spread chest pushing against Uke’s elbow while moving a half step away
 Tekubi Waza (Wrist Techniques)
	- Kote-Hineri – Outside wrist block with same side hand 
	/ Circle behind Uke feeding fingers into opposite hand / Move Uke’s hand 
	toward ear / Move behind Uke’s elbow / Roll the elbow down, around, and out 
	/ Pin Uke’s shoulder with foot / Move arm forward feeding fingers tips into 
	thigh / Apply pressure by squeezing knees together
- Kote-Gaeshi – Failed Kote-Hineri / Outside wrist block 
	with same side hand / Circle behind Uke feeding fingers into opposite hand / 
	Move Uke’s hand toward ear / Follow Uke’s push in front of hand making Uke 
	step / Hand exchange with thumbs to the back of Uke’s hand / Turn away from 
	Uke and move forward with arms straight and centered making Uke step and 
	fall
- Tenkai-Kote-Hineri - Outside wrist block / Circle 
	behind Uke / Hand exchange while moving out and then back in to Uke / Follow 
	motion under Uke’s arm lifting hand with thumb to the sky / Bring Uke’s arm 
	down with thumb pointing away from you / Move around Uke’s arm to the front 
	allowing Uke to fall to a knee / move a half step away
- Shio-Nage – Right hand inside butterfly block leading 
	Uke forward / Turn back toward Uke palm out / Continue turning back in tight 
	circle raising hand and entering under Uke’s arm until you are facing the 
	opposite direction from Uke / Push your hand up and away from Uke / Step 
	forward pushing hands to front center / Follow Uke’s fall and complete with 
	locking arm curl
- Tenkai-Kote-Gaeshi – Shio-Nage with distance / Left 
	hand inside butterfly block leading Uke forward / Hand exchange while 
	turning back toward Uke palm out / Continue turning back in tight circle 
	raising hand and entering under Uke’s arm until you are facing the opposite 
	direction from Uke / Distance creates a Kote-Gaeshi type wrist lock. / Push 
	your hand up and away from Uke / Step forward pushing hands to front center 
	/ If Uke does not fall immediately, turn hand over palm toward Uke’s face 
	turning Uke and move to Uke’s rear / Complete throw with Ushiro-Ate
 Uke Waza (Floating Techniques)
	- Kote-Taoshi - Inside butterfly block leading Uke 
	forward / Turn back toward Uke palm out / Circle behind Uke / Put pinky of 
	hand closest to Uke in Uke’s elbow crook and curl hand to center palm up 
	until Uke kneels
- Mae-Otoshi - Inside butterfly block leading Uke 
	forward / Turn back toward Uke palm out / Circle behind Uke / Push arm 
	closest to Uke under Uke’s elbow with palm out raising Uke / On Uke’s drop, 
	turn hand under with palm toward Uke until forearm is against Uke’s side / 
	Step and push Uke through body down toward Uke’s little toes
- Sumi-Otoshi – Failed Mae-Otoshi / Inside butterfly 
	block leading Uke forward / Turn back toward Uke palm out / Circle behind 
	Uke / Hand exchange raising newly free hand to Shomen-Ate position / 
	Continue moving forward and around pushing Uke off of little toes
- Sumi-Taoshi – Sumi-Otoshi / Uke blocks Shomen-Ate 
	pushing hand through / Follow Uke’s push until hand rest with pinky in Uke’s 
	elbow crook / Circle away from Uke curling hand to center palm up until Uke 
	falls
- Sumi-Garuma – Sumi-Taoshi / Uke curls arm when your 
	hand touches Uke’s elbow crook / Open and face Uke rolling Uke’s elbow 
	between you / Continue moving elbow beyond while moving behind Uke / 
	Complete throw with Ushiro-Ate
- Sumi-Tai-Garuma – Sumi-Otoshi / Uke blocks Shomen-Ate 
	and attempts Waki-Gatame / Step through following Waki-Gatame motion / 
	Circle forward and regain center with arm / Control Uke’s arm after the fall
- Hiki-Otoshi-Garuma - Inside butterfly block leading 
	Uke forward / Turn back toward Uke palm out / Circle behind Uke / Move out 
	in front of Uke with a hand exchange / Free hand goes to Uke’s elbow / Turn 
	away from Uke and move forward making Uke step and fall
Points of Interest:
Wrong Arm Block?  Change Hands
Wrong Foot Attack?  Move behind to off-balance
Practice 180 degrees, but not required for off balance.

Tsukuri – Entry into throw
Kake – Throw, Finish, Execution of technique
